Bridging cosmetics and fashion:
The design of the salmon leather fashion accessory for Dr.Hauschka Skin Care

During the 2011 Berlin Fashion Week, a small but sweet press event took place in Berlin. Dr.Hauschka Skin Care continued its collaboration with young designers to present an organic salmon leather fashion accessory to the international fashion press.
Designed by the Berlin-based eco fashion label MIKENKE, the accessory can be worn as a hair band or as an arm band. Following in the footsteps of its collaboration with Kaviar Gauche, Dr.Hauschka Skin Care is once again bridging the realms of cosmetics and fashion. Proceeds from sales will go to benefit the eurythmy project "What moves you?" - one of the projects that Dr.Hauschka sponsors.

The fashion accessory by Dr.Hauschka Skin Care and MIKENKE unites both the differences and commonalities of the two companies under the motto "where nature meets refinement".

Berlin's Rosa Gröszer and Tina Luther, who met during art school, are both convinced that sustainability has to be just as high a priority as design in fashion. Using ecological materials and protecting nature are key issues for both fashion designers. They also believe that the raw edges of a design can serve as a basis for developing geometric lines. Dr.Hauschka Skin Care, by contrast, represents softness and, of course, nature. This very contrast is where the collaboration between MIKENKE and Dr.Hauschka Skin Care begins, uniting the two approaches. The fashion accessory is geometric with a solid basic form. The characteristic surface of the vegetable-tanned salmon leather it is made of gives it a very natural, flowing and organic appearance. The leather, a bi-product of certified organic salmon farms, is light-weight and thin yet robust and tear-proof. The result is a bold combination of a raw material that is both new yet traditional and a timeless liberated design. The colour is achieved largely through the natural tanning process as well as with roots and wood, the article is unbleached and uncoated and is free of allergens.

About MIKENKE

Designers Rosa Gröszer (born in Berlin in 1975) and Tina Luther (born in Kühlungsborn 1979) met each other at Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee art school and have been sharing their foible for a mathematical approach to design ever since. Together they formed the label MIKENKE to develop high-quality clothing for self-determined cosmopolitan women. MIKENKE is a high fashion label with its finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist, aiming at mastering the balancing act between sustainability and a contemporary verve. They experiment with geometric lines, new pattern techniques and fresh materials. Stereotypical fashion norms are whimsically flouted while calling conventional ways of looking and dressing into question.
